Backgammon was first played about 5000 years ago in Mesopotamia,
somewhere between Iran to India of our days. In those days the board was made of stone
(usually marble) and the dice were made of volcanic rock.
The first boards were designed like a whole table,
and this is why the original name is "Tawleh" that came from the root "table". Until today the game is called
"Tawleh" in Arabic, "Tavli" or "Tabli" in Greek and "Tavla" in Turkish.
Back then backgammon rules
were different then what we know today, and the game was played by more then two players. During the days of the Greek
empire the game had spread over to the Middle East and Europe.
The Game became very popular in Greece, and continued to the Balkan courtiers and the rest of Europe. During these days boards
were start to be made of wood, and the pieces and dice from bones.
In the 18th century the game got its English
name and common international rules as we know today, and became popular in the US and Canada. Today there are a lot of online
internet backgammon
software clients from various types and qualities, and the game is becoming very popular playing online.
A lot of world wide tournaments can take place thanks to the developing on the internet and online softwares,
and the game becomes more popular then ever.
